Harrison Boulevard & Hays Street District
Between 1890 and 1892 the primary development within Boise was the area around 13th Street with five subdivisions being platted and developed. Harrison Boulevard was the line between developing neighborhoods and west orchards and farms. It wasn’t until 1895 that signs of development began to materialize beyond Harrison Boulevard with the establishment of Locust Grove Addition.

A major developer of the North End was the real estate firm of Pierce and Co. Walter Pierce along with his partners Lindley Cox and John Haines were instrumental in the promotion and development of the Harrison Boulevard area. Pierce was an investor in capital improvements such as the Boise Rapid Transit trolley line and insured services were extended to the newly developed areas. The ultimate promoter, he proclaimed the benefits of North End and its improved lifestyle. The real estate firm planted trees along the streets and urged buyers to take a walk, drive, or an enjoyable bicycle ride to these “choice home sites.” It is said they planted more than 7,000 trees in the North End alone and encouraged the addition of four public parks.

The first house built on Harrison Boulevard was by Judge H. Meyer in 1901. The house was of a Queen Anne style, located at 1304 Harrison at the corner of Eastman. It would be the first of many elegant and beautiful homes built in the area. The styles of homes in the area are as varied as the people who live in them and each reflect the personality and character of its owner.
