| 2003 Endangered Sites Camas Prairie Railroad - Northern Idaho
This railroad line from Spaulding, Idaho to Grangeville is one of the most spectacular rail lines in the West, moving through seven tunnels and across high wooden trestles that resemble giant Lincoln Logs; this 67-mile line is currently approved for abandonment. Closure of the line, a major transportation route for the timber, mining, and agricultural industries could be devastating to the surrounding communities. As a product of the changing landscape and the increase recreational demand in Idaho, many archaeological sites are quickly being threatened. Areas such as those along the Historic Lolo Trail and the Snake River are seeing a tremendous increase in visitors to the sites. Often these highly sensitive areas can easily face irreparable damage. Preservation Idaho will continue to promote the preservation and sensitive exploration of these resources they truly are the irreplaceable. |
