Help Save Historic Highlands Elementary School.
The survey is closed but the topic is still open! The school district will make their decision soon.
The Boise School District is going to invest bond dollars in necessary updates to this school. They need to decide between a remodel/upgrade of the existing mid-century school to include all expansion, safety, and design amenities OR demolition of this historic building to build a new school from the ground up.
Needless to say, there are opinions and benefits/weaknesses on both sides but, as preservationists, we know that the school can be upgraded to accommodate today's standards for amenities and safety while maintaining the most significant architectural elements that make Highlands Elementary unique and precious to the community and the city. The school was built in 1962 as part of the mid-century Highlands neighborhood and is a treasured, integral part of the community for many. It is one of the last, best examples of mid-century schools left in Boise.
It's important to remember that either design will address safety issues; both security inside and outside the school and with regard to pick/up-drop/off and students walking to school. The criteria is the same for either choice and both have to be delivered within budget.
Only one design will be pursued so this is the time SPEAK UP AND BE HEARD!
