36th Annual Orchids & Onions Awards Recipients

Boise, Idaho – April 25, 2013 – Preservation Idaho is pleased to announce the recipients of the 36th Annual Orchids and Onions Awards.

Every year, Preservation Idaho hosts the Orchids and Onions Awards, an awards ceremony designed to celebrate individuals and organizations that have made a positive contribution to historic preservation, and in turn to bring awareness to those projects that have shown insensitivity to the state’s cultural history.

This year’s Orchids and Onions recipients are as follows:

Excellence in Historic Preservation:

  • 12th Street Bungalow, Idaho Falls, ID – The project fully meets the accepted best practices in historic preservation while serving as an example for the possibilities of adaptive re-use of an income producing property.

Contribution to Historic Preservation:

  • Stoddard House Restoration, Silver City, ID – Arguably the most important residential landmark in Silver City, its preservation deserves attention and recognition.
  • O.E. Bell Building, Idaho Falls, ID – Historic schools are often threatened, yet this project shows they can successfully be converted for contemporary use.

Distinguished Preservationist:

  • Julie Braun Williams, Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Arco, ID – Williams has not only excelled in her position as manager of historic resources at the INL, but has served as a professional example through work as a volunteer chair of her local historic preservation commission.

Friend of Preservation:

  • Father Gerald J. Funke, Nampa, ID – Awarded in recognition of Father Funke’s commitment to the preservation of Owyhee County buildings and his leadership in the restoration and maintenance of the historic structures under his care.

Cultural Heritage Preservation Heritage Stewardship:

  • Trailing of the Sheep Festival/Livestock Driveway, Hailey, ID – Since 1997, this event has kept the spirit of central Idaho alive by allowing modern Idahoans the opportunity to experience a slower pace of life and a connection to our agrarian roots.
